An Iola legend is turning 44 on Friday as Steve Uitts celebrates his birthday.
Anyone that has ever attended an Iola High School or Allen Community College sporting event knows Steve and his boisterous support of the kids he loves so much.
For a newcomer to the area, Steve is an amazing resource to have. He knows more about Red Devil athletics than I could ever hope to learn if I worked here for 10 years.
There have been many times during my time here when Steve will give me a call to tell me that a game has be rescheduled or canceled before the coach even calls me, and that is due to the love area coaches have for Steve.
Tomorrow, Steve will celebrate his birthday very fittingly at the Fort Scott Tournament while rooting on his Indians.
Happy birthday Steve. Thank you for all you do for our local athletes.
Several area athletes and coaches also wanted to wish Steve a happy birthday. Their messages follow:

“Happy birthday Steve! Thanks for always coming and supporting us. We appreciate all the support you give to the athletes in Allen County!”

“Happy birthday Steve! You’re the greatest fan in the world and I always love having you at all of the Mustangs games! Iola High School sports wouldn’t be the same without you man!”
Ethan Holloway

“Steve is without a doubt the No. 1 fan we have at Allen Coummunity College. I appreciate his loyalty to the college and the surrounding community schools. Happy birthday Steve and thanks for you support!”
Andy Shaw, Head Coach
ACC men’s basketball

“Steve brings a creative kind of atmosphere to every game. He’ll tell you exactly what you did wrong, and makes sure everyone else hears it. But also makes sure you know how good you’ve done, letting everyone know that as well. You haven’t experienced a real game if you haven’t had Steve there. Happy Birthday Steve!”
Noah Johnson
Humboldt Class of 2018

“Steve will always be special to every one of us kids in Iola. He is our super fan and he loves us. Steve gave me my nickname that will stick with me forever. I will always be known as ‘twos.’ Steve will have special place in my heart always.”
